From 2014 to 2016, these were pivotal years. The birth of my first child was much more than an event; it was also a rebirth for me. I then began a new chapter, exploring new horizons. My son's awakening to nature, life, with its cycles and mysteries, was our guide in this shared adventure.
New life, new tools. While he was experiencing the world with his toys, the OP-1 became my playmate. I rediscovered a musical practice, much more anchored in playing than in programming. Despite the preconceived idea of a “hipster gadget" for daddy, this OP-1 reconciled me with a more spontaneous musical gesture with direct recording via “tape” as a sort of return to roots.
I was naturally led to create an immersive, fragile and dreamlike soundscape where sound colors blended delicately, as if to stimulate a child's imagination. I favored soft textures, subtle noises, buzzing and crackling sounds, evoking both nature, and technology. It was like composing a sound fresco, a landscape where machines dialogued with the flora or the imaginary microcosm of an insect, creating a strangely symbiotic universe.
The whole was elaborated around a specific sampled tone (the result of a lucky sound design session), which, thanks to its hybrid resonances between a celesta and a music box, allowed me to compose enveloping melodies similar to the one of a lullaby. The drums, often bathed in endless reverberation, project us into the heart of an immense space. Each strike resonates like a distant echo, amplifying in contrast this feeling of immersion, of being a grain of sand in a constantly expanding sound universe.
This musical writing process was sometimes like a self-hypnosis session. A recreation that I allowed myself when the child was napping. Perhaps I was connecting to his dreams, and to mine for him that I wanted to see expand and come true.
